Prologue: The Escape
When I was younger, just barely sixteen years old, I lived, for all intents and purposes, normally. A high school student in an American suburb, I was happy, energetic and naïve. I rarely thought of death outside of my most recent obsession.
I'd shifted interests all my life, but they mostly rested within games. Video games. This most recent one was Mortal Kombat.
Yes, Mortal Kombat was just a game in my world of birth.
I rarely thought of death, and yet this series provid

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins
I had no idea how long it was before I had a thought or feeling I can remember. It could have been a moment or an hour or a day or several.
But when I could feel again, there was steady warmth on the right side of my body. I felt safe, secure. I'd forgotten what happened at home. I just felt content. And a bit like I was floating
I decided that I liked the warm sensation, so I tried to move to curl into it. I don't know how successful I was, for the heat soo

Chapter 2: A Night Upon the Lost Sea
I scanned the deck. Not only did the boat look ancient, but it also looked like it wasn't very well patched up before it came for us and the other kombatants. The sails were so thin; they were almost nonexistent, more or less transparent. Clumps of plant hung off them, the masts, and the rails on the edges of the ship, and wherever it was, cobwebs were nearby.
I started to step cautiously towards the bow end, beckoning for Cecilia to follow.
"So " she began.

Chapter 3: Shang Tsung's Island
My tension from the previous night's incidents faded while I slept, so when Cecilia woke me up, telling me we would all be taking smaller boats to the island, I was energetic and even cheerful.
We fell into place, behind Johnny, Sonya, and Liu. While we waited, Cecilia asked:
"Hey, when did you get a ribbon?"
I turned to her. "What?"
She smiled, pointing to her own. "I don't remember seeing you with one. When did you get it?"
I touched it, noticing it had loosened

Chapter 4: The Island's Secrets
I ended up running into an open place with a resemblance to the one before the dining hall a few stone statues, a path distinct from its surroundings. Torches lined another entrance on the other side.
Sonya had arrived there first, and I was the last to catch up to the troop of chosen kombatants, falling in directly behind Cecilia.
Immediately, the lieutenant glared at us. "How many times do I have to tell you? I don't need your help. I can take care of myself.
